A good place to stay between Rome and Naples

Today I'm straying away from Tuscany. Many readers ask me for a good place to stay between Rome and Naples as they head south after visiting the sights of Tuscany. Luckily, I can recommend an excellent stop between Rome and Naples that allows you to stay at the seaside while still having Rome and Naples within easy reach.

My friend Enza Volpe is a licensed tour manager who offers accommodation in her family home at the ancient seaside town of Gaeta in the region of Latium (Lazio). Gaeta is 75 miles (120 km) south of Rome and 50 miles (80 km) north of Naples. Gaeta overlooks a beautiful bay and when the weather is good, as it usually is, you can dine out on a terrace with a sea view.

Enza, who speaks very good English, not only offers very spacious and comfortable accommodations in Gaeta but also home-cooked traditional meals for those who would like to try the real thing! You can even have cooking lessons to learn how to make the local specialities of Gaeta.

Rome can be reached in one hour from Gaeta by the fast train. If you decide to go to Rome from Gaeta by yourselves, Enza can nevertheless arrange for a guide that she knows well to meet you at your platform in Rome so that you can make the most of your day there. Alternatively, Enza, as a licensed tour manager, will organise a minibus and driver, and accompany you throughout the region, including Naples, Posillipo, Herculanium, Pompeii, Amalfi and Sorrento, arranging for local guides where necessary as in archaeological sites such as Pompeii and in museums.
