Bargello Museum cocktail evenings 2012

The Aperitivo ad Arte that has been taking place at the Uffizi throughout the summer of 2012 on Thursday evenings pauses during August, and is replaced by similar opportunity at the Bargello Museum in Florence.

The first night of "Cocktails For Art" at the Bargello will take place on Wednesday 1 August, from 7 pm onwards with cocktails and graniti available. It will then continue every Tuesday evening during the months of August, September and until 9 October.

You can visit the Hall of Michelangelo and the Florentine Renaissance - which also houses many works of other great artists such as Giambologna, Cellini, Ammannati, Danti and Bandinelli - as well as the majolica exhibition "Fabulae Pictae. Myths and stories in the Renaissance majolica". As always, you can enjoy an aperitif in one of the most beautiful art museums in Florence.

Entrance costs 12 euros and it is advisable to book by phoning: 055 29 48 83.

By the way, the OFFICIAL website for the Bargello, the Uffizi and other museums in Florence is: http://www.polomuseale.firenze.it/en/

And the OFFICIAL website for buying tickets is: www.b-ticket.com/b-ticket/Uffizi/default.aspx

There are a number of other websites with official-sounding names and domain names that are agencies charging exorbitant prices for tickets, reservations and other services.

What to do in Chianti, Italy

I have added an introductory travel guide page on "What to do in Chianti, Italy" to the Greve in Chianti "Tuscany Blog". The aim is to provide visitors to Chianti with concise and up-to-date information on things to see and do in Chianti preferably before you leave home so that you can more efficiently plan your time. Your trip to Italy might be the one big trip of a lifetime and will for sure cost money. It's therefore important to plan well before you leave - even a day-by-day itinerary - and to crystalise your interests. I know that many people emphasize spontaneity, which is good, but taken too far "spontaneity" becomes wandering aimlessly around in the wrong place and that can consume a lot of your valuable time. I also recommend basing yourself in one place for several days so as to not lose time finding your accommodation, checking in, unpacking etc. Chianti and, indeed, Tuscany, are not huge areas and one or two bases will allow you easy access to the entire region.

What to do in Chianti, so far, is divided into the sections below and I'll be adding to that list of topics as well as providing more detail and individual pages.
  • Chianti vineyards and wine.
  • The Chianti countryside and the villages of Chianti.
  • Art, architecture and formal gardens in Chianti.
  • Music in Chianti, especially summer music festivals.
  • Folkloric festivals, culinary festivals and other similar annual events.
  • Food-related festivals in Tuscany.
  • Chianti culinary specialities.
  • Shopping in Chianti.
  • For things to take home - emphasis on ceramics.
  • Leatherwear.
  • “Outlets” selling high fashion items.

Monteriggioni Mediaeval Festival (Festa Medievale)

Monteriggioni is a Tuscan village surrounded by one of the most intact curtain walls in Italy. The town is absolutely worth a visit and there is no better time to do so than during the Monteriggioni Mediaeval Festival (Festa Medievale) which takes place this year on 6-8 July and 13-15 July 2012. Tuscany is famous for its mediaeval festivals and the one taking place at Monteriggioni ranks among the best - as good or better than the Volterra festival.

Monteriggioni Mediaeval Festival

Most of the inhabitants dress in mediaeval costume and man the stalls selling antique-style handicrafts, herbs and mediaeval food. There are excellent parades with jugglers, acrobats, stiltsmen and so on, plenty of early music and often a fabulous re-enactment of a mediaeval battle. The tamed birds of prey are especially interesting - not only hawks, but also owls and other birds. For children there are puppet shows and and a skilled illusionist, and for adults much street theatre.
